Information not shared is not useful information

We live in an era of information overload but this does not mean we are sharing what we need to, especially when it comes to public safety

Episode 182 – the need to share has never been more important

Humans have never had access to so much information. The advent of the World Wide Web may be analogous to the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenburg in 1436 or thereabouts, but that comparison is off by several orders of magnitude. Creating information is not, however, the same as ensuring it gets to those who need it. This is especially true when it comes to national security, as agencies hide behind ‘need to know’ obstacles. Can we do better? A conversation with Michele Harrigan on law enforcement in Canada.

About my guest

Michele Harrigan has a PhD in transnational police cooperation from the London School of Economics and has worked as an Industry Partnerships Officer in Cybersecurity at The Fields Institute For Research In Mathematical Sciences from her home in Calgary, Alberta.

Canadian Intelligence Eh

In a world of multiple voices and opinions it can be very hard to know where to turn.  One choice is to look to those who actually worked in counter-terrorism in the national security world. In these half-hour podcasts, 30-year Canadian intelligence veteran Phil Gurski is joined by a fascinating array of individuals with something meaningful to say about these issues as they provide insight into what they mean and what we need to do about them.

About Phil Gurski

Phil Gurski is the President and CEO of Borealis Threat and Risk Consulting Ltd. He worked as a senior strategic analyst at CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) from 2001-2015, specialising in violent Islamist-inspired homegrown terrorism and radicalisation, and as a multilingual analyst at CSE (Communications Security Establishment) from 1983-2001. He is the author of six books on terrorism, including the second edition of The Peaceable Kingdom: A history of terrorism in Canada from Confederation to the present, published by Double Dagger in February 2023.
