Politicians are very busy people. Not only are they responsible for the day-to-day operation of government, but they have ridings (constituencies) to care for. They cannot keep up with everything. Furthermore, few have any background in intelligence and thus may have no idea what to make of the information provided by the nation’s ‘spies’. That is where a national security advisor (NSA) comes in. Borealis talks with former Canadian NSA Daniel Jean about the challenges of the job.

He worked as a senior strategic analyst at CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) from 2001-2015, specialising in violent Islamist-inspired homegrown terrorism and radicalisation. He is the author of six books on terrorism, including the most recent The Peaceable Kingdom: A history of terrorism in Canada from Confederation to the present.
