BANGALORE, INDIA – Professors emeriti are celebrated for their years of scholarship and knowledge: oh to die in a terrorist attack.
The academic system is beyond my understanding, that’s for sure. Yeah, I taught linguistics at Carleton University in Ottawa part-time for 15 years or so, and I was called a ‘sessional’ instructor. I guess that meant I gave sessions??
As for the rest of the hierarchy there are full professors, assistant professors, associate professors – does anyone really know the distinctions? And, if you live long enough and are well enough thought of you may just become a professor emeritus! Now THAT’s a title.
Professors emeriti often stick around to pass on their hard-won and in-depth knowledge and may even teach a little bit. There are few, I’d wager, who are killed in a terrorist attack.

Terrorists believed to be part of the Pakistan-based Islamist Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) attacked the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and opened fire, killing one and injuring four. The terrorists then escaped, probably via the outer wall. No group officially claimed the assault.
A few of us were walking to the next building when we heard sounds like the heavy use of firecrackers. Someone was throwing crude bombs and shooting randomly in the walkway between the buildings.

The dead man was Professor M C Puri, Professor Emeritus in the Mathematics Department of Delhi’s Indian Institute of Technology who had retired a few years earlier. I am quite sure he did not expect to be killed in the very environment he had devoted his life to.
