It is also home to one of the longest running jihadi campaigns on the planet and has produced two major violent extremist groups: Boko Haram (BH) and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Jacob Zenn is an adjunct associate professor on African Armed Movements and Violent Non-State Actors in World Politics at the Georgetown University Security Studies Program and and editor and fellow on African and Eurasian Affairs for The Jamestown Foundation in Washington DC. His latest book is Unmasking Boko Haram: Exploring Global Jihad in Nigeria which was published in April 2020 by Lynne Rienner.

He worked as a senior strategic analyst at CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) from 2001-2015, specializing in violent Islamist-inspired homegrown terrorism and radicalisation.
