BRESCIA, ITALY – Just because you have a cool name as a terrorist group does not justify your actions.
If you have not checked out previous Borealis podcasts on the worst terrorist group names you really should. There was one on groups in general and one on far right groups specifically. These were made to poke fun at terrorists, not to give them more publicity.
Some names are bland but also kinda cool. Take the Peruvian Sendero Luminoso – Shining Path. Hearing this makes you think of a highway to heaven I’d imagine – or Stephen King’s novel The Shining: take your pick.
So, what do you think about the Italian neo-fascist bunch which call themselves ‘Ordine Nuovo‘ (New Order)? Cool name or not? Regardless, they did carry out a massive terrorist attack on May 28 in 1974.

A bomb placed in a garbage bin in Brescia near an anti-fascist march killed eight people and wounded another 102. The Ordine had been around since the mid-1950s and was once seen as one of the most important fascist groups in post WWII Italy (recall that under Mussolini Italy was a fascist state: I guess the Ordine wanted to go back to that).

Stunningly, the court cases of the organisers of the attack lasted until 2015! And a new trial for one of those found guilty was ordered in May 2022! Now that’s some publicity for a terrorist gang, no?
